Inspired by the Legacy of Marsh

My name is Alex Barreto. At the time of writing this I am 19 years old. I currently attend Lehman College in the Bronx, New York; which is also where I live. I am in my second year in college, and I'm pursuing a Bachelors degree in Environmental Science. I live with my mother and older brother. My hobbies include playing soccer and hiking through heavily wooded areas.

I discovered the SCA very randomly. One day between my classes, I had enough free time to research internships online. I came across the SCA and the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller site. I read the description of the internship, and it listed many skills that I was looking forward to learning. It was also located in a town and state that I was very unfamiliar with, but interested in.

A little while later, I took it upon myself to learn more about the park, and about the life of George Perkins Marsh. In addition to that, I also read about the National Park Service as well. I do remember being amazed by all that the National Park Service had achieved, and also how much of an impact George Perkins Marsh had on the legacy of conservation.

The reason I pursued this internship was for several reasons. Personally, I've always appreciated and acknowledged nature. I believe nature and the environment are both powerful things that can also bring people together who have common interests. There are also many aspects of nature and the environment. I am currently unsure of what specific role I would like to have with the environment. I am of course, hopeful that I may find the answer this summer at the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.
