Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park announces a temporary closure of the north end of the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas. The closure will take place Monday, June 7th, closing the north end of the ranch to visitors including the Show Barn, Hangar Visitor Center, Western National Park Association gift store, and Texas White House Complex. There is potential for the closure to extend into Tuesday, June 8th, depending on weather and construction progress. Check the park’s website and social media for updates.
The closure allows for construction work on the historic Taxiway. During this time, construction crews will be installing a new drop inlet and storm sewer piping.
The taxiway served its namesake purpose shortly after then-Senator Johnson purchased the LBJ Ranch from his aunt in 1951. The construction of the adjacent airstrip necessitated a taxiway for loading/unloading and moving to the runway for take-off and landing. Many times, LBJ would meet visitors in his Cushman Cart as they deplaned to escort them to the Texas White House. Since 2008, the taxiway has been used as visitor parking.
Although access to the north end of the park will be closed, the south end of the ranch remains open to visitors. Visitors can enjoy the Junction School and Birthplace, as well as view the legacy Hereford cattle from a safe distance. Please plan ahead and stop by LBJ State Park and Historic Site for an LBJ Ranch driving permit, as parking will be limited to the Cemetery parking area only. In addition, the Settlement trails and grounds of the Boyhood Home in Johnson City remain open.
