STONEWALL, Texas – From Monday, March 6, through Wednesday, March 8, the Hangar Visitor Center at the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas will undergo structural investigations for rehabilitation of the Hangar Building. For the safety of the public, the Hangar Visitor Center, including its restrooms, will be closed March 6-8.
Despite the closure of the Hangar Visitor Center, all other points of interest, including the driving tour of the LBJ Ranch, will remain open during normal hours of operation. Rangers and volunteers will staff an outdoor information desk at the JetStar airplane near the Hangar, and Western National Parks Association will have an outdoor sales area for visitors desiring to purchase books and mementos of their day in the park. While cash is preferred for purchasing, credit card purchases will be available throughout the closure.
Restroom facilities will be available at the Birthplace/Johnson Family Cemetery site just inside the LBJ Ranch entrance gate at the start of the driving tour. Restrooms will also be available at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site on the opposite side of the Pedernales River across from the LBJ Ranch.
The work is part of the larger Texas White House Rehabilitation Project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA). The engineering and architectural firm of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., will be conducting structural investigations at the Hangar building utilizing a mechanical lift and large ladders to look above the ceiling grid and investigate the structural components which aren't visible from the ground or attic.
The 2020 Great American Outdoors Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and other construction funding sources are part of a concerted effort to address the large maintenance backlog in national parks. Supported by revenue from energy development, GAOA's Legacy Restoration Fund provides up to $1.3 billion per year for five years to the National Park Service to make significant enhancements in national parks to ensure their preservation and provide opportunities for recreation, education, and enjoyment for current and future visitors. The park is currently in the design phase of the project, which will be completed this summer and a construction project awarded by September of this year.
