Johnson National Historical Park, in partnership with the Johnson City Public Library, will host and conduct a public forum titled "Created Equal – America's Civil Rights Struggle" at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Johnson City Public Library, 501 N. Nugent Avenue, Johnson City, Texas. Dr. Gregg Michel, professor and chairman of the history department at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will moderate the forum. The "Created Equal" forum commemorates the 50th anniversary of major events in America in 1964, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, native son of Johnson City, Texas. The forum will feature a 30-minute excerpt from the "1964" episode of the PBS series American Experience, showcasing major events of 1964, including the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Following the video, Dr. Michel will moderate a discussion addressing how the Civil Rights Act and other events of 1964 impacted the nation 50 years ago, and the relevance those events still hold for American society today.
