On July 14, 2018, Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is hosting the second “Fiesta en el Parque/Fiesta in the Park” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time. This free, family event is co-sponsored by the Association of Latino Americans of Southern Indiana (ALASI) and will feature food and music representative of the Latino culture in Southern Indiana and a tour of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial by Spanish language park rangers.
“We are excited to welcome ALASI and members of the growing Hispanic community to the park for this fun picnic event,” National Memorial, Acting Superintendent, Kristi Brown said.  Lincoln also has a connection to Hispanic History. Before becoming President, Abraham Lincoln served one term as a Congressman from Illinois. “After only three weeks in Congress, Abraham Lincoln denounced the Mexican War with the ‘Spot’ resolutions,” Chief of Interpretation, Mike Capps said. “One of only a few legislators taking this stance, it earned Lincoln national attention, but eventually cost him his seat in the next election.”
ALASI, which launched the annual Hispanic Cultural Festival in Huntingburg, Indiana in 2012, is co-hosting the Fiesta en el Parque/Fiesta in the Park event. “Many of our members are unaware of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and Lincoln’s history,” ALASI President Evelyn Rivas said. “This picnic event gives us a chance to combine our love of family gatherings and engaging with our public lands.”
