NASA GO on the Lewis and Clark Trail

GO (GLOBE Observer) on the Lewis and Clark Trail

Summer 2019

Dear Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Partner,

Over 200 years ago, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and their Corps of Discovery traveled a total of 8,229 miles from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean and back again. The laborious process they used to map the region and collect data on nature can be greatly simplified by the use of current technology (i.e. smartphones) carried by thousands of visitors who walk and drive the same paths today. In 2019, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and NASA’s GLOBE Observer (part of the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment Program) collaborated to create “GO on a Trail,” with the intent to engage visitors along the trail in an innovative way as citizen scientists, non-professional scientists collecting useful scientific data.

From June 1st through September 2nd, we encourage you to set up Observation Stations and provide information about how to collect data using the Land Cover tool in the GLOBE Observer app. By participating, modern-day visitors enhanced their experience by seeing their surroundings in a more purposeful way, as well as providing needed current data for scientists from the National Park Service and those connected to NASA.

We look forward to your participation in this exciting collaboration.

Ashley Danielson, Volunteer and Partnership Specialist

Head to your @lewisandclarknht and take #landcover observations using the @nasa.globeobserver app. This summer-long campaign kicks off on #NationalTrailsDay and concludes on #LaborDay. Each observation you make along the trail will increase your chances to be one of our top observers and be eligible for a prize package. Learn more and plan to participate today: https://observer.globe.gov/do-globe-observer/challenges/go-on-a-trail

As you collect data, remember: Leave no trace, take only observations. GO on a trail... and STAY on it. By staying on marked trails, you are protecting sensitive ecosystems and reducing your risk of coming into contact with dangerous plants and animals.

What do you notice about the world around you? Do you document your observations? During the course of their expedition, Lewis and Clark knew they were nearing the Pacific Ocean through drawing conclusions from their observations. Read all about it: https://www.nps.gov/articles/clark-knew-they-were-near-pacific.htm

Be like Lewis and Clark and document your observations by using the @nasa.globeobserver app. By doing so, you will contribute #landcover observations to scientists interested in the @lewisandclarknht and help them monitor changes over time.

And don’t forget to take part in our #GOonaTrail summer #citizenscience challenge. Learn more: https://observer.globe.gov/go-on-a-trail

William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) was considered a master cartographer. “Every few days, Clark would take the notes from all of his observations and measurements and compare them to Lewis’ notes to draw maps of the river and landmarks to scale. The accuracy of his maps is widely admired …” Keep reading: https://www.nps.gov/articles/william_clark_cartographer.htm

You can follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and create your own map within the @nasa.globeobserver app along the @lewisandclarknht. Join the summer #citizenscience challenge today!

Along the @PacificCrestTrail in Oregon, you may travel through a closed forest canopy like this! A closed forest canopy is a dense growth of trees in which the top branches and leaves make a canopy, or a ceiling, that light can barely penetrates to reach the ground.

What other types of #landcover can you map while using the @nasa.globeobserver app? Be sure and submit your observations to have them counted in your total for the #GOonaTrail summer #citizenscience challenge.

Facebook Partner Page

Join the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Facebook group for partners and sites to keep up-to-date throughout the anniversary year and beyond. The group is intended for partners and sites along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The NPS headquarters office will use this page to share information on projects and initiatives going on along the trail. We encourage participation and sharing among trail partners. This would be a great place to share best practices and ask questions.

GO on the Lewis and Clark Trail Products

Observation Station

These Observation Stations stickers (2 foot round) were mailed to visitor centers along the trail. The Observation Stations are a critical component to the GO on the Lewis and Clark Trail citizen science campaign. These outdoor stickers should be placed in an outside location near your center or museum. The ideal location would be one that features a land cover type that can be easily photographed with the Globe Observer app.

A map of visitor centers receiving the Observation Station can be found at https://www.nps.gov/lecl/planyourvisit/maps.htm

Poster

A limited number of posters will be distributed to each visitor center and museum on our partner list. These posters can be posted in your center or distributed to area teachers who may be interested in participating in the GO on the Trail campaign.

If you’d like an electronic version of the flyer for printing, please email ashley_danielson@nps.gov

Stickers

These stickers are for distribution to the public. We would encourage you to use the stickers as a way to encourage visitors to participate in the GO on a Trail campaign.
