Fort Spokane Museum and Visitor Center to Close for Repairs

The Fort Spokane Museum and Visitor Center in Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is temporarily closed for critical historic preservation repairs. Dating to 1880, the landmark building originally served as the fort's guardhouse and now operates as the primary hub to introduce visitors to the park and its many resources.

The building is usually open during summer months and houses exhibits, visitor information, a park film, and ranger programs. It is expected to reopen in July. During the temporary closure, park information, visitor services, and construction updates will be available on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/laro.

Funded by the Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund signed into law by President Donald J. Trump in 2020, the project includes repairs to the porch, roof, windows, exterior brick, and interior plaster.

The Great American Outdoors Act remains one of the most significant conservation achievements of his administration. The law provides permanent funding to address long-deferred maintenance needs across the National Park System, ensuring safe, resilient and accessible public lands for future generations.

Construction areas, including scaffolding and staging areas, are in place around the building and the parking lot to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and crew.

During the closure:

• Portions of the parade grounds will remain open to the public, but parking will be limited.
• Parking along the access road will not be allowed.
• Restrooms at the visitor center will be closed. Facilities will be available in the Fort Spokane day-use area near the bridge.

The work will be performed by a National Park Service Maintenance Action Team. The teams specialize in preserving historic structures, enabling the National Park Service to complete projects in small and medium-sized parks while passing critical trade skills to the next generation. These improvements will help preserve the historic structure and support future visitor experiences and interpretive programs.
