FRITCH, Texas ––Lake Meredith and Alibates Flint Quarries invites everyone out for the Hike of the Month on September 26, 2015. As our Harbor Bay and South Turkey Creek trails gain popularity with local mountain bikers, the parks wish to expand interest in yet another bikeable route: Dolomite Point Road. Join rangers for a fun morning bike ride out to Dolomite Point! This will be a family-friendly bicycle ride from the Alibates Visitor Center Parking lot to Dolomite Point, with an optional short hike to overview South Turkey Creek. The biking will be on paved and dirt roads (fat tires recommended), with a total distance of about 9 miles. The grade is mostly gentle, but there will some long descents on the paved portion. Young bikers must be competent enough to control their speed down long slopes. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please register in advance by calling Park Headquarters this week, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Signing in begins at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Alibates Visitor Center parking lot, and participants are asked to arrive in time to check their gear for safety before the ride begins. Please bring your bike, helmet, and any equipment you might need. Helmets are advised for all riders and the National Park Service will insist that children wear helmets for this ride. Don't forget sunscreen, bug spray, and extra water. Those who wish to participate in the optional hike should bring long pants and hiking shoes or boots, as tall vegetation can be a factor on the route. A sag wagon will be provided to carry your snacks and extra water. The schedule for the ride is as follows: 8:00 –9:00 a.m. Gather at visitor center; sign in 9:00 a.m. Official start of ride to Dolomite Point 10:15 a.m. Sag wagon will arrive at Dolomite Point; optional hike/scramble will start 11:15 am Official start of ride back to visitor center; sag wagon will run until all registered riders return to visitor center.
