New ‘Take A Look’ Campaign Promotes National Park Near Las Vegas

BOULDER CITY, Nevada – There is one national park just minutes from Las Vegas that has Joshua trees, slot canyons and night skies illuminated by the Milky Way. One national park where the rocks are as red as fire and the mountains are purple majesties.

This national park is Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

In celebration of National Park Week April 20-28, the National Park Service is encouraging people to discover and enjoy the country’s network of 419 natural, cultural and recreational sites.

“As the nation celebrates, we’re inviting people to ‘Take a Look’ at Lake Mead through a different lens,” said Christie Vanover, public affairs officer. “It’s more than the beautiful lake over the hill. It’s the birthplace of recreational preservation.

“It’s a place where both serene bald eagles and aerodynamic bass boats can be clocked in at over 45 miles per hour. Where agile desert bighorn sheep and skilled climbers can be seen scaling canyon walls. It’s a park where you can camp with all of the amenities of home or go completely off the grid,” she added.

As part of National Park Week, Lake Mead National Recreation Area has launched a 60-second video and series of images to provide people with a snapshot of the park’s diversity to offer a different perspective.

The video showcases scenes that are reminiscent of other national parks and highlights the broad scope of recreation activities possible at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, including hiking, biking, boating, fishing, 4-wheel driving, scuba diving and more.

It closes out with a showgirl on a personal watercraft, reminding people that all of this is just minutes from Las Vegas.

The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Entry is generally $25 per vehicle; however, on April 20 (the first day of National Park Week), all national parks across the country are offering free entry.

The park is also hosting its annual Junior Ranger Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. This free event will offer interactive stations with kids’ activities that focus on nature and water safety.

When kids complete their activities, they will be sworn in as Junior Rangers and receive a Junior Ranger badge and certificate.

“We encourage people to find their connection to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and when they do, we hope they join us in caring for their national park,” said Beth Ransel, deputy superintendent.
