Single Day Events FAQ'sDepending on the type of event, volunteers might need to meet a certain age requirement. If you’re interested in bringing someone that is under 12 years old, contact us to see if we have an event that is right for you! All volunteers must have a signed Volunteer Service Agreement, and youths under 18, must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature. Working service dogs are welcome at all events. Please leave pets at home as they can be a distraction and can potentially be a safety risk for other volunteers. Registered volunteers will receive an email one-week prior to the event with details about the project. This email will include where and when to meet as well as the required Volunteer Service Agreement (301A). Allow plenty of time to travel to the park, as there can often be traffic entering the park. When you arrive at the work site, sign in with the project leader and get to know your team. The project leader will provide a safety briefing and instructions. During the event, you’ll get to learn more about the National Park Service, our resources, and work with members of our staff and the public.
All event volunteers must bring a signed and completed Volunteer Service Agreement (301A) on the day of the event. Bring ample water, snacks, and sunscreen for a day in the park. All event volunteers receive free entry to the park when you come to an event, so feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy the park after your event.
We have a variety of events throughout the fall and spring months. You can visit the Lake Mead event calendar to view our upcoming events. Information about single day events can be found on our event page. Contact us to get on our mailing list.
Absolutely! We frequently work with all types of groups including but not limited to corporate businesses, scout troops, school and youth groups, as well as non-profit organizations. Groups can join any of our public volunteer events. Please keep in mind that pre-registration is required, so make sure you know how many people will be attending. If you’d like to schedule a project just for your group, you can learn more on our volunteer groups page. All members of your group must be able to perform the required work for your project. There are projects for large groups, or we can divide your group into several smaller workgroups to accomplish those projects.
All volunteers get free entry into the park on the day of the volunteer event. A password will be sent out ahead of time before the event that volunteers can give to the entrance station staff upon arriving. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the park after your event!
Long-Term Volunteer FAQ's Living in the park is a privilege that only a few volunteers will experience. Lake Mead has identified several volunteer positions that qualify for an RV site with full hookups. We primarily recruit volunteers from the local surrounding communities to help the park meet the goals and mission. Contact Lake Mead’s volunteer office for more information.
Some of the benefits of being an active member of the Lake Mead volunteer community are
Generally, non-US citizens may become NPS volunteers as long as they are not being compensated in any way for their volunteer work. It is illegal for foreign nationals to receive any form of payment, whether for housing, meals, or other types of compensation, including reimbursements. Legal permanent residents (informally called “green card holders”) or persons possessing a J-1 or F-1 visa are exceptions to this compensation rule. There may be other visa types and/or programs authorized by the Department of State or Department of Homeland Security that allow for lawful work in the United States. Please contact us well in advance to see what the process is to become a volunteer.
Service animals are welcomed. If you are residing in the park, a maximum of two pets are permitted. Pets living in the park must have proof of vaccination. Pets are not allowed in federal buildings or government vehicles or boats unless they are service animals.
Yes, we work with students and educational institutions to meet certain requirements. Contact us for more information.
Lake Mead posts all open long-term positions on www.volunteer.gov. Visit the site and do a search for Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Our positions will pop up and you can directly apply through the website. If you do not find anything you are interested on volunteer.gov, please contact us for more information.
Positions that involve interacting with the public will require volunteers to wear a uniform so they can be identified as a knowledgeable member of our team. Other positions do not require volunteers to wear a uniform.
We offer a variety of long-term volunteer positions, you can learn more on our Long-Term Volunteers page, but here are a few of our most common positions:
Volunteers are encouraged to volunteer until they are no longer having fun. If you have a few hours a week or a month, ask us about opportunities that fit your schedule. If VIP position qualifies for an RV site, volunteers must donate 32 hours a week for the site. Contact us and let’s see if we can find a perfect match for your skills and time you want to volunteer.
