News Release Date: June 19, 2013 Port Alsworth, Alaska – On the evening of June 18th a wildfire ignited by lightning was discovered by National Park Service volunteers. The Kristin Fire is located in the northwest corner of Lake Clark NP&P near Kristin Creek. The fire was initially reported as five acres in size and burning in tundra and black spruce. Due to the observed fire activity, eight smokejumpers were sent to evaluate and monitor the fire and to protect adjacent structures. The Kristin fire is now approximately 30 acres in size. The fire will be allowed to take its natural course per protocol, with continued monitoring by State of Alaska Division of Forestry in conjunction with National Park Service. The fire is located north of the Stony River approximately 60 miles north of Port Alsworth, Alaska. The fire danger in the northern portion of Lake Clark NP&P remains high with a chance of thunderstorms, including dry lightning, through this evening.No precipitation so far on the fire, there has been some isolated precipitation reported in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. |
