Once again warm and dry weather has settled over Lake Clark NP and the Currant Creek Fire has responded by becoming active. The Division of Forestry monitored the 779 acre-fire twice July 23. During the first flight, fire staff observed a small smoke on its far northwestern uphill edge. During the second flight in the early evening, staff reported a noticeable smoke column in the same northwestern section that rose from a two-acre area that had open flames. West winds pushed the fire upslope toward an area that previously burned. Continued warm weather is in the forecast through the weekend and the fire will likely stay active. If in Port Alsworth or flying in the vicinity of the fire, anticipate a noticeable column of smoke. Fire managers anticipate the fire will grow based on local weather patterns and dry and available vegetation. It is still north of Currant Creek and at this time does not pose an immediate threat to resources. Two National Park Service fire professionals are making plans to travel to Port Alsworth in the next few days to keep a close watch on the fire. As they gather new fire information, NPS staff will share it with the community and visitors. The Kristin Creek Fire, located in the northwest corner of Lake Clark NP and 60 miles north of Port Alsworth, was declared out July 23.
