Introduction:Thank you for signing your class up for the “Lives of Inland Brown Bears at Lake Clark”. We are looking forward to joining your class. This lesson has three parts. In part one, a park ranger will visit your class via your preferred distance platform. They will provide a presentation on bear behavior and habitat use. They will also introduce the lab and go over the directions. In part two, you'll work with your students on the lab activity. You'll divide your students into two groups and assign each group one of the two labs. The labs include data collection, analysis and synthesis activities for two different bears. The activities will help students assess home range, habitat use and diet preferences. In part three, the ranger returns to the class. This presentation will focus on student results. The ranger will discuss students findings for each bear, and lead a discussion comparing them. The discussion will get students thinking about the variables that impact a bear life history strategy. Materials and Preparation:Before we visit your class we'll email you the labs and answer keys. Please review them. If you have any questions feel free to email us back. This lesson uses two videos, found below. Have your students view "The Lives of Inland Brown Bears" just before the ranger visits your class. During the ranger's part one visit, they will show the "Collaring Brown Bears" videos. If you are teaching in-person, please have this video downloaded and cued up before the presentation starts. At the appropriate time we’ll pause the presentation and have you show it to the class. This provides a better viewing experience for your students, rather than streaming it to you. For teachers whose students are remote learning, we'll post a link to the video in the chat. Please feel free to email with question at any time, LACL_Education_Rangers@nps.gov .
