TULELAKE, California — On November 29 in Malin, Oregon and December 1 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Lava Beds National Monument (NM) will be sponsoring two events to kick off six months of special programming related to the 150th anniversary of the Modoc War. These are the first of several programs that will occur throughout the Klamath Basin from November 2022 through April 2023.
On November 29 at the Broadway Theater in Malin, beginning at 6:00 pm, the park in cooperation with the Klamath County Museum will be presenting the documentary “Modoc Nation: An Untold Story of Survival”. The film will focus on the story of how the Modocs, who fought against the U.S. Army in 1872-73, survived in their forced relocation to Oklahoma. It was produced by the Modoc Nation. Doors will open at 5:30 pm. The event is free.
On December 1 at the Klamath Falls Library, beginning at 6:00 pm, former park employee Christopher Combel will be presenting a free program, “Fields of Fire: A Reevaluation of Modoc War Era Fortifications”. The presentation will focus on the work he did at the park, focusing on how the archaeological features are reshaping our understanding of the Modocs’ and soldiers’ experiences. Mr. Combel is currently the lead archaeologist at Casa Grande Ruins NM in Arizona and has worked previously at Lava Beds NM, Yosemite National Park, and the Southeast Utah Group of National Parks (Canyonlands and Arches).
