Road Work Starting at Lava Beds

TULELAKE, California- Work to repave 18 miles of the road through Lava Beds is set to begin the week of June 13, 2022. The contractor plans to start pulverizing and paving north of the Entrance Station working their way to Valentine cave. Road work will take place Mondays - Fridays between 6:00am and 6:00pm, between now and can continue till September 2023. Visitors should expect up to 30-minute delays.

The 13 million dollar project will include not only the main park road but parking areas such as Gillems Camp, Devil's Homestead, Black Crater, Balcony/Boulevard Caves parking area, Bunchgrass overlook and Indian Well Cave parking lot. The visitor center parking area and the following sides roads will also be re-paved; Merrill Cave road, Skull Cave road, the Campground, Cave Loop road and Valentine Cave road. Visitors should also expect to see these locations to be closed for 1-2 days at a time. We will do our best to update our current conditions page with what side roads and parking areas are closed.
