TULELAKE, California — From November 2022 through April 2023, Lava Beds National Monument will be remembering the 150th anniversary of the Modoc War.
Over the course of the next few months, the park along with community and tribal partners will be hosting a series of special programs throughout the Klamath Basin. As of this date, the programs that we have on the calendar are as follows:
- November 29, 2022 at the Broadway Theater in Malin, Oregon at 6:00 pm. We will be showing the documentary “Modoc Nation: An Untold Story of Survival”.
- December 1, 2022 at the Klamath Falls Library in Klamath Falls, Oregon at 6:00 pm. Archaeologist Christopher Combel will be presenting his work on Captain Jack’s Stronghold, “Fields of Fire: A Reevaluation of Modoc War Era Fortifications”.
- January 17, 2023 at the Merrill Civic Center in Merrill, Oregon TBA
- February 25, 2023 Klamath County Museum in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Lava Beds in partnership with the Klamath County Museum will be hosting a panel of authors who have written books related to Modoc culture and the war.
- March 25, 2023 at the Ross Ragland Theater in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Lava Beds in partnership with the Klamath County Museum will be hosting a series of films related to the Modoc War, along with a Q&A with several of the creators of the films.
- April 15, 2023 at Lava Beds National Monument. The NPS will be hosting a capstone event with more details to be announced at a later date.
The Klamath County Museum will also be offering a special auto tour of the area with a focus on the Modoc War on November 29. Please call the museum at (541) 882-1000 for more information.
The park’s archeologist, David Curtis, will be offering special tours of Captain Jack’s Stronghold over the winter and spring. The tours will occur December 3 and 17; January 21; February 4 and 18; March 4 and 18; and April 1 and 22 beginning at 1:00 pm at the parking lot of Captain Jack’s Stronghold.

Lava Beds National Monument, established in 1925, is a land of turmoil, both geologic and historic. Over the last half-million years, volcanic eruptions have created a rugged landscape dotted with diverse volcanic features. Lava tube caves, Native American sites, historic battlefields and a high desert wilderness experience await you!
