KOTZEBUE, Alaska — The National Park Service (NPS) is pleased to announce the selection of Siikauraq Whiting as the new superintendent for Western Arctic National Parklands, which administers Kobuk Valley National Park, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, and Noatak National Preserve.
A lifelong resident of Kotzebue, Siikauraq brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and local expertise to her new role. Her distinguished career includes six years as Mayor and Chief Executive Officer of the Northwest Arctic Borough, where she led initiatives supporting sustainable development and community well-being. From 2021 to 2023, she served as the Executive Director for the Native Village of Kotzebue, strengthening her deep connection with tribal communities.
Siikauraq also has extensive experience in public land management and conservation. She worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and gained early-career insights into the National Park Service. Her expertise spans land management, resource protection, administration, and museum management, all of which will serve the Western Arctic National Parklands and its mission exceptionally well.
"Our land identifies who we are as Iñupiat. Our people have thrived in this environment since time immemorial," said Siikauraq Whiting. "I look forward to using Iñupiat Ilitqusiat (Iñupiat Values) as the foundation of my work to assist with National Park Service initiatives."
Western Arctic National Parklands includes some of the most pristine and remote areas in the United States, preserving vast Arctic landscapes, wildlife, and waters; a rich cultural history; and unparalleled opportunities for subsistence use and outdoor recreation.
