As of Sunday, November 7, 2010, Knife River Indian National Historic Site is operating on Central Time hours. The park's hours are 8:00-4:30 CT daily.
The park is located in Stanton, which is in Mercer County. In October 2009, the County Commission petitioned the Department of Transportation to change the county from Mountain to Central Time. There was a public comment period available to residents from March through June. A final rule signed by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood stated that the decision was made to suit the "convenience of commerce" in Mercer County. The change from Mountain to Central coincided with the end of Daylight Savings Time on November 7.
Acting Superintendent Chad Prosser said "The change to Central Time will make it easier for park staff when they travel to Bismarck for meetings; staff won't need to calculate departure time in relation to two time zones."
