Stanton, ND: Join us for the first ever Flint Knap-In at Knife River Indian Villages NHS on Saturday, June 23, from 9:00-4:00 p.m. CDT. The public will have the opportunity to watch artisans craft tools throughout the day. Three flint knappers from across the Northern Plains will demonstrate the ancient art of flint knapping for visitors. John Martinson, Loyd Griswold, and Bill Ihm will produce flint arrowheads, knife blades, and spear points. The knappers may have finished pieces available for sale. Flint knapping was an important skill practiced at the Knife River Indian Villages for thousands of years. Native artisans favored the durable and shapable Knife River flint which was quarried sixty miles west of the villages and traded across North America. Flint knappers today keep this ancient art form alive by sharing their knowledge in community events. Superintendent Wendy Ross says, "Knife River flint was one of the most important resources used by Native people living along the Missouri and Knife Rivers. This event will bring the art of flint knapping back to life in a place where it was practiced for thousands of years." Knife River Indian Villages NHS is located 1/2 mile north of Stanton at 564 County Road 37. For more information, please call the park at 701-745-3300. |
