CALUMET, MI — The National Park Service (NPS) and the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission are hosting an open house on June 12 at 7pm to share updates on the two National Historic Landmark (NHL) districts within park boundaries: Calumet and Quincy Mining Company.

National Historic Landmarks are designated by the Secretary of the Interior to recognize the most significant places in American history. The Calumet and Quincy NHLs districts were first designated in 1989 because of their nationally significant copper mining history and the rich density of historic buildings, sites, and structures that reflect that history. Since 1989, a great deal of historical research has added to our understanding of the significance of each district. In addition, some historic properties within the districts have been lost to fire, development, and other factors. The nominations, therefore, need to be amended to reflect those changes, and our new knowledge.

The open house will be held at 7 pm on Monday, June 12th at the NPS’s Calumet Visitor Center, located at 98 5th Street in Calumet, Michigan. National Park Service staff will give a short presentation about the NHL program and an overview of how the Calumet and Quincy nominations have changed, including modifications to the boundaries. Copies of the nominations and maps will be available for review, and NPS and Advisory Commission staff will be available to answer questions; light refreshments will be provided.
