National Park Service Approves Relocation of Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

KENNESAW, GA. — The National Park Service signed a finding of no significant impact for the environmental assessment for the Old 41 Highway Widening and Improvement Project at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

“This transportation project will address traffic concerns in Cobb County, while bringing a safe crossing to a risky intersection,” said Acting Superintendent Beth Wheeler.

The park evaluated four alternatives to widen and realign approximately 0.71 miles of Old 41 Highway between Stilesboro Road and Kennesaw Avenue. The selected alternative will include construction of two roundabouts at Stilesboro Road and Kennesaw Avenue, widening the road to four travel lanes with a raised median and constructing a multiuse path tunnel to separate vehicles from pedestrians and bicycles along Stilesboro Road.

The Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Department of Transportation and Cobb County Department of Transportation collaborated with the park on this project. The project will require a highway easement deed and special use permits for construction activities.

In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act, a draft EA was available for public review from August 19 to October 10, 2025, via the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment website and the GDOT project website (Old 41 Highway Widening - PI 0016410). The park also received public feedback earlier this year through a public meeting and comment period.
