What to Know About Abandoned Mines in Kenai Fjords National ParkSince the late 1800s, a number of mineral exploration and mining operations have occurred within the area now known as Kenai Fjords National Park. A number of abandoned and inactive mine sites are located within park boundaries. Hazards exist at these sites. Visitors should use extreme caution and avoid abandoned mineral properties. Explosives, mine openings, unsafe structures and toxic chemicals may be present.
