Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is committed to continually improving the accessibility within the park's trails and facilities so that everyone can enjoy all the monument has to offer. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about accessibility.

A Park in Progress

Established in 2016, Katahdin Woods and Waters is a park in progress. Maine's North Woods is a wild place, and your patience is appreciated your patience as National Park Service staff and partners work to make this a space everyone can experience.

Keep in mind: Katahdin Woods and Waters NM is remote and reached only by dirt roads. There are limited facilities within the monument and cell service is spotty and unreliable. Please do your research and take a look at the maps before your visit!

Cell Service

There is little to no cell service throughout the park.

Logging Roads

Monument roads are mostly dirt logging roads. Expect poor road conditions including washed out areas, large potholes, and mud depending on the season. High clearance vehicles with four-wheel drive are highly recommended.

Weather

Weather can change quickly and may be rainy, snowy, icy, and very windy. When it is windy, watch out for downed trees.

Insects and bugs

During the summer season black flies and mosquitos are ever present. Ticks are an issue in the area; where light colored pants, tuck your pants into your socks, and do a thorough tick check after spending time in the park.

Hunting season

Visitors should wear high visibility clothing, such as hunter orange vests or hats, during hunting season (late August through December). More information about hunter orange clothing and season dates is available from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
