Restriction of Tripod Use

The use of tripods and rail-mounted fixtures will be prohibited on the Brooks Falls Platform from June 15 through August 15. The decision is a result of increased visitation and demand for viewing space, combined with the park’s responsibility to ensure equal access to facilities for all visitors.

Every summer, the annual migration of sockeye salmon return to Bristol Bay, attracting bears and wildlife observers to Katmai National Park and Preserve. The prime viewing area is the Falls Platform at Brooks Camp. The number of people allowed on the platform at any given time is 40. During peak viewing season, space is in high demand and limited.

Tripods may be used in a monopod configuration if the legs are fully collapsed to the center position and the unit is not self-supporting.

The restriction is only in effect on the Brooks Falls Platform, and does not include the Riffles Platform or Lower River Platforms.
