Anza 250

June 03, 2025 Posted by: Estrella Sainburg and Christopher Bentley

Photos cut out into the words Anza 250 show buildings in the SF presidio, saguaro cacti, a biker with purple lupin, a brightly colored mural, two people walking a desert trail, waves crashing into rocks, and brass prayer candles

On June 27, 1776, as the Declaration of Independence was being signed in Philadelphia, the colonists of the Anza expedition arrived at their destination in what would become San Francisco. Both of these events would dramatically shape the cultural and political landscapes of the United States. In 2025 and 2026, the Anza Trail invites communities along the historic path of the 1775-76 colonizing expedition to commemorate the complicated and evermore fascinating history of the paths and events that make up this National Historic Trail.

As we approach the beginning of the commemorative year (September/October 2025), events are already being planned and organized. Some events are on the NPS calendar already! We are very excited to be learning about and sharing the great activities and events that you’ve been planning. If you have an event ready to be shared, let us know and we will add it to the calendar.

Not sure what to plan or organize? Guiding principles, event ideas, downloadable templates, and instructions for requesting the commemorative logo are available on the Anza 250 webpage. Anza Trail staff are holding Anza 250 Open Office Hours once a month to answer questions, brainstorm 250th events or activities, and discuss more about the Anza 250 efforts. These virtual calls are taking place the fourth Tuesday of every month from 3-4pm PDT/AZ. For information on how to join, request the call in number and link by emailing e-mail us. If this schedule does not work for you, reach out and let us know. We’re here to support you!

Anza 250 will only come around once! We hope you will join us in marking this milestone.
