Encountering a mountain lion is rare, but if you do remember that:

  • Cougars will typically avoid confrontation with humans as they do not recognize people as prey. However, it is still best to avoid cougars as much as possible. Give them enough space and do not approach. As with most wild animals, they will try to avoid a confrontation and give them a way to escape.
  • Do not run from a lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lion's instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal. Make eye contact. If you have small children with you, pick them up if possible so they don't panic and run. Stay calm. Hold your ground or back away slowly. Face the lion and stand upright, doing your best to appear larger. The idea is to convince the mountain lion that you are not prey and that you may be a danger to it.
  • The best ways to avoid encounter with a mountain lion is to hike in groups, with adults supervising children. Report all mountain lion sightings at the visitor center.
