Plains, Georgia: Jimmy Carter National Historical Park is pleased to announce a Presidents’ Day program on Monday, February 19, 2024.
What better way to celebrate Presidents’ Day, than at a Presidential National Historical Park? Beginning at 10:00AM on February 19, 2024, Historians Dr. Larry Cook, Stanly Godbold, Jr., and local Mayor of Americus Lee Kinnamon will lead a riveting conversation over President Carter’s local, national, and international impact. Seating will begin at 9:30AM and is open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. This event will also be available to view via livestream at www.facebook.com/JimmyCarterNPS.
Mayor Lee Kinnamon is a retired educator of 30 years, has served on numerous boards and authorities at the state and local level, and has chaired the state authority overseeing the Historic SAM Shortline Railroad for 20 years. He has served the city of Americus as Mayor since 2021.
E. Stanly Godbold, Jr. was an educator of Mississippi State University from 1977 until his retirement in 2003. Since his retirement, Godbold has studied the lives of and authored two biographies on President and Mrs. Carter.
Larry Cook is a lifelong collector of historic presidential memorabilia and is a historian specializing in the personal side of the Presidency and lesser-known facts. He and his wife Diane founded the Plains Helping Plains Initiative dedicated to formulating and managing projects that benefit Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. In addition to his discussion, Dr. Cook will have artifacts from his personal collection on display.
After the program concludes, enjoy a stroll to downtown Plains for lunch, peanut inspired delicacies, and local hometown shopping. Pay homage to Plains’ presidential legacy with a visit to the Plains Depot or Billy Carter Service Station, both made famous during the 1976 Campaign. Complete your trip with a short drive to Archery, Georgia to experience the humble roots of a would-be president at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm.
