The Grace Lewis Miller Book Collection consists primarily of books on American history, concentrating on the Jeffersonian era on the American frontier.
Grace Darling Lewis was a historian and writer born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 22, 1895. She graduated from McKinley High School and Harris Teacher's College. She received her A.B. degree from Washington University and married Herman Benjamin Miller, M.D. in 1918. After the death of Dr. Miller in 1935, she did further study at Washington University in St. Louis and earned an M.A. in History from the University of Texas.
The collection contains 273 books and journals, most of which were published between 1930 and 1975. The books reflect the Gateway Arch National Park's main theme of American westward expansion, and also include materials on Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and other early American historical figures and events.
Ephemera found inside of these books, as well as Mrs. Miller's extensive research/private papers, are also collected in the GANP Archives.
