Jewel Cave National Monument is a day-use area only, with specific opening and closing times for the visitor center, facilities, and surface trails. For specific hours of operation, visit Operating Hours and Seasons for updated times, tour information, and program offerings.

Most visitors traveling to the monument arrive by private vehicle. Use the park map to help with guidance along Highway 16, coming from either Gateway Community of Custer, South Dakota or Newcastle, Wyoming.

Car, Motorcycle, & RV
While driving to and from the monument, be aware of potential road closures and construction projects to avoid unsafe situations and delays. Also, watch for wildlife on Highway 16, as well as along the entry roads to the visitor center and Jewel Cave Historic Area. Travelers are encouraged to use established pull offs when stopping to view wildlife or surrounding scenery. The speed limit is typically 25-45 mph on most park roads; the visitor center area is 15 mph due to increased visitation. Motorcyclists should pay close attention to the speed limits along Highway 16, due to sharp curves and blind corners.
Bicycle
Many cyclists enjoy the challenge and beautiful views to be had while bicycling through the monument. Please be advised that an established bicycle path is not available, and roadway shoulders are limited in space. For this reason, riders must travel single file, and obey all traffic laws. Be aware that many park visitors are not accustomed to sharing the road and may not offer sufficient space for bicyclists. Ride safely!

Commercial Tours of the Black Hills
Several companies operate commercial tours of the surrounding Black Hills and multiple parks, ranging from a couple hours to all day. Although the monument is not often included with these packages, numerous options exist for other nearby public lands and attractions, such as Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, and Crazy Horse Monument. Check with the local communities of Custer and Newcastle for more information.
