History

Independence National Historical Park (INDE) was authorized by an act of Congress on June 28, 1948, and was formally established on July 4, 1956, "preserving for the benefit of the American people as a national historical park certain historical structures and properties of outstanding and national significance…associated with the American Revolution and the founding and growth of the United States." Located in the Society Hill, Old City, and Germantown neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Independence National Historical Park encompasses not only such famous sites and artifacts as Independence Hall, Congress Hall, and the Liberty Bell, but over twenty other structures, gardens, squares, and cemeteries. The INDE Library and Archives contains official reports that document the park's mission. These reports have been organized into the Historic Resource Studies Collection.

The Historic Resource Studies Collection seeks to be a comprehensive collection of reports that directly relate to the management and operations of the park. Also known as cultural resource studies, these reports are produced by National Park Service staff, contractors, and researchers in the course of conducting the park’s business. The collection reflects the stages of the park's development and illustrates how plans for historic interpretation, preservation, and the administration of INDE's cultural resources evolved over time. Reports in this collection precede the park's enabling legislation in 1948, and follow the park's development through to the present day.The cultural resource studies include historical research on the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, as well as master plans for preservation, maintenance, and interpretation. Research reports can include a variety of useful information, including narrative history, illustrations, and statistical data, and are intended to address specific research needs within the park. Many of the reports center on individual park sites, and contain information on architectural history and a site’s past inhabitants. Reports also include interpretation guides and set forth plans for preservation and furnishing of park buildings.

The present Historic Resource Studies Collection developed from a History Branch project in 1983 that inventoried INDE's cultural resource studies. In 1998, the park archivist formally organized the collection. The Historic Resource Studies Collection was completed in conjunction with the Northeast Region's (NER) Cultural Resource Bibliography (CRBIB) Project, which resulted in a comprehensive database of resource management reports from parks throughout the NER. The CRBIB Project Online Catalog can be accessed at http://nercrbib.nps.gov.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Historical Studies, 1950-2013, undated
This series is arranged chronologically.
Series I contains history reports utilized in interpretation and park planning at INDE. Many of the reports examine various aspects of the eighteenth century, such as early American banking, architecture and city planning, city landscaping, pastimes and hobbies, and notable events surrounding the American Revolution. This series also includes a copy of the administrative history of the park, “Independence: Creation of a National Park” by Constance M. Greiff. Series II is composed of reports related to planning, management, and interpretation at INDE. Some of these reports pre-date the park and document land acquisition strategies and initial preservation plans for park sites. Of particular importance in this series is the National Shrines Park Commission Report, submitted to Congress in 1947 in support of the creation of a national park in Philadelphia. The report suggests prospective sites for inclusion into the park, and includes supporting documents from the City of Philadelphia. This series also contains master interpretive plans for the park, results from visitor services surveys, cultural landscape reports, collection management plans, and notably, INDE's 1997 General Management Plan. Many folder titles include a Cultural Resource Bibliography (CRBIB) number that links the document to the Northeast Region's CRBIB Project Catalog.
