The event is free and open to all.The year 1948, 75 years ago, was a pivotal one in the United States of America as it was around the world. The Marshall Plan as enacted by the United States Congress and signed by President Harry S Truman, aided over a dozen countries in Europe recover from the lingering effects of World War II while battling the advances of communism. President Truman’s administration was the first to recognize the new nation of Israel in May, 1948. President Truman issued an Executive Order desegregating the Armed Forces that summer. That summer American planes delivered food and supplies to the needy in Berlin. President Truman and New York Governor Thomas Dewey campaigned across the country in a legendary effort, as a new word was introduced to the American lexicon, “whistlestop.” In November, 1948, Harry S Truman stunned the press and pollsters and defeated Governor Dewey, winning a term as president in his own right.
The 399th Army Band will perform selections from their wide repertoire. Music is no stranger to the Truman Farm. A visitor to the Truman Farm would have encountered music, whether it would have been hearing Harry Truman’s mother or father singing while working or hearing Harry Truman or his sister Mary Jane playing the piano in the Farm Home.
Persons attending are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket, water, and bug repellant as necessary. There will be onsite help with parking. Tours of the Truman Farm will run as normal that day, except during the performance. All tours are first come, first served. In case of adverse weather, updates will be made on the park website, including address of an alternate location.
The National Park Service thanks the City and people of Grandview, and the 399th Army Band for making this event possible.
