INDEPENDENCE, MO— The National Park Service at Harry S Truman National Historic Site is proud to announce some special programs to be offered to the public in July, 2023. All park programs are free and open to all.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 11:00am, the park offers an informal opportunity for kids to learn the art of letter writing. Margaret Truman Daniel often referred to her father as a “demon letter writer.” Historians still benefit from the thousands of letters that Harry S Truman wrote during his lifetime, particularly the enchanting “Dear Bess” letters that document his courtship of Bess Wallace Truman. For this program, the park provides the paper, the envelope, the stamp…kids just need to provide their words and thoughts. This program is held in the Noland Home, 216 North Delaware Street.

On Monday, July 10, 2023, 6:00pm, the park will offer a public showing of the PBS film “Influenza, 1918.” America battled this terrible disease in 1918, a disease which impacted Independence, Missouri, as well as the Gates and Wallace families at 219 North Delaware Street. This film will be shown in our visitor center at 223 North Main Street, Independence, and is shown under special license from PBS.

On Thursday, July 20 2023, 2:00pm, the park’s ongoing reading and discussion group at Mid Continent Public Library, North Independence branch, continues with a discussion of  Amity Schlae’s Coolidge,  a recent analysis of the life and times of President Calvin Coolidge. All are welcome to join in this discussion, and books are available to borrow through the Mid Continent Library system, in all formats, with a library card. The North Independence branch is located at 317 West 24 Highway in Independence. This dynamic group is entering its seventh year, and the park is grateful for its partnership with Mid-Continent Public Library.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, 6:00pm, the park will offer a showing of episode 4 of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s film series “The Vietnam War.” This series explores the causes and effects of that war, and is dedicated to all who served in that conflict, particularly our local servicemen and servicewomen. This film will be shown in our visitor center theater.

Tours of the Truman Home in Independence are offered daily Wednesday-Sunday. Visitors may secure their free tickets at the visitor center at 223 North Main Street, Independence.

Tours of the Truman Farm Home in Grandview will be offered Fridays and Saturdays through mid-October. This may be affected by severe weather or staffing considerations.

All park events are on the park’s website calendar, at: https://www.nps.gov/hstr/planyourvisit/calendar.htm

Harry S Truman National Historic Site was created by an Act of Congress in May, 1983, and is entrusted with preserving the Truman Home in Independence, Missouri, the Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri, and other historic homes and resources associated with the 33rd President of the United States
