Independence, Missouri – Perhaps this will suit you…a program tailor-made for those wanting to learn more about Harry S Truman, one of the smartest dressed presidents in our history. One hundred years ago this fall, Harry S Truman, recently returned from service in the Great War and recently married, opened a men’s haberdashery in Kansas City. Although the business wasn’t successful, Harry Truman would always have a bit of a haberdasher in him, and had high regard for others in the trade.

On Tuesday, November 26, at 12:00 noon, Harry S Truman National Historic Site welcomes guest speaker Howard Goller, who will speak about his Grandfather, Sol Stolowy. Mr. Stolowy crafted several articles of clothing for President Truman, both while President of the United States and in his retirement in Independence.

A native of Poland, born there in 1908, Mr. Stolowy came to the United States in 1927 and spent the rest of his life as one of the most popular and well regarded tailors in the Kansas City area. Through mutual friends he got to know Harry S Truman, who became his most famous client. Following his death on December 26, 1972, Harry S Truman was buried in a suit made by Mr. Stolowy.

During his presentation, Mr. Goller will share stories of his grandfather’s life, and family stories about the Truman family. Some examples of Mr. Stolowy’s handiwork and craftsmanship, currently preserved in the park’s museum collection, will be made available for viewing.

This program will be held at the park’s visitor center, at 223 North Main Street, Independence, Missouri, at 12:00 noon. All programs and services that the park offers are free, and all are welcome.
