On June 10, 2024, fifty new young American citizens took their oaths of citizenship on the driveway of the home of President Harry S Truman, at 219 North Delaware Street, at Harry S Truman National Historic Site, in Independence, Missouri. These new young citizens come from at least 13 countries. Rory Rowland, Mayor of Independence, Missouri, offered a welcome and congratulations on behalf of the community.
In her remarks, Superintendent Carol J Dage stressed the concept of "home," specifically about President Truman, his personal attachment to his home and community, "A home to a man who came from humble origins here in western Missouri. A man who loved school and learning. A man who worked in a drug store, who wrapped newspapers, who worked in a bank, worked on a farm. A man who fought in World War I, had a clothing store that failed. A man who then spent the rest of his life serving the public, including as President of the United States. A man who, in this home, lived with his wife, who he adored since he was six, their daughter, and several in-laws."
Mid-Continent Public Library was present with their new "Reading Rocket," and provided free books and materials to the new citizens and their families.
This was the second time that the Truman Home hosted this ceremony, the first in July, 2023.
