Holes are drilled into the exposed lath from the top side to provide access to the space where the plaster has separated from the lath. A stop collar is attached to the drill bit to prevent penetration through the plaster layer.
Floor cavities are vacuumed to remove over 100 years of soil, loose plaster, artifacts and saw dust from drilling.
Small objects found in the floor are bagged, labeled and eventually added to the collection. Artifacts such as wallpaper remnants, small personal items, hairpins and scraps of paper slipped between the floorboards or were left in the floor during previous renovations. Artifacts found under the step in the second floor bathroom include a button hook, a palmolive shave cream label, matches, straight pins and a razor blade. |
