Theater Artist Michael Cansfield is Artist-in-Residence at Homestead National Monument of America

Michael Cansfield will be the eight artist of the 2015 Artist- in-Residence program at Homestead National Monument of America. He will be presenting a program based on his work at the monument on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Education Center. This is the seventh year of the monument's Artist-in-Residence program.

Michael Cansfield is a Michigan native who has lived and worked for the past 25 years in Chicago in the performing and cultural arts fields. Michael's professional experiences include positions with the International Theatre Festival of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Steppenwolf Theater Company, and the Chicago Humanities Festival. Currently, he works for the Chicago History Museum, where he produces a yearly series of public programs on cultural history. Additionally, he has produced plays and public programs for the University of Chicago, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Arts Institute of Chicago, and the Poetry Foundation. He is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and Kalamazoo College (B.A. Theater, 1987).

For his residency at Homestead National Monument of America, Michael plans to research the stories of early homesteaders and write a play based on homesteaders' experiences. Great Plains history along with the national story of the Homestead Act of 1862 and the resulting American expansion will also be explored in this new theater piece. At his public program, Michael will discuss his research and writing processes and will share passages from homesteading stories uncovered during his research.

Michael will be working at Homestead National Monument of AmericaSeptember 14 –26, primarily at the Heritage Center. He welcomes questions about his work from all visitors.
