December 2023 Notice of Flight Operations

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for December 2023: 

December 5 and 7 between 6:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- 9,000-ft. elevation. 

December 7 between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. for survey and control of invasive fountain grass in the new Great Crack parcel at 500-ft. elevation.

December 11 and 14 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to transport camp gear and supplies from the end of Hilina Pali Road to a spike camp along Pepeiao Trail to support survey and control of invasive faya tree at 2,100- ft. elevation.  
 
December 13 and 14 between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa. between 4,000-9000 ft. elevation.

USGS HVO may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. 

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather. 

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
