Media Advisory: Most of Park Open on National Day of Mourning

Hawaii National Park, HI – To honor the passing of our country’s 41st president, George H.W. Bush, Wednesday December 5 has been designated a National Day of Mourning. Most of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will be open to visitors, but the park will not collect fees. The Kahuku Unit will be closed. 

Who: Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park 

What and Why: To honor the passing of our country’s 41st president, George H.W. Bush, Wednesday December 5 has been designated a National Day of Mourning by Executive Order. Most federal offices are closed, including the post office in the park. Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park’s main unit will be open to visitors, but the park will not collect fees. The Kahuku Unit will be closed. Flags will be flown at half-staff until December 30. 

When: Wednesday, December 5, 2018 

Where: Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and other federal sites
