George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to host the 4th annual “Storytelling Days” event on Friday August 23 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and Saturday August 24 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. This event celebrates the establishment of the National Park Service, and focuses on stories about American culture and history. Come hear the stories of diverse experiences and special places and spaces from these dynamic storytellers. Our history is part of who we were, who we are, and who we will be. The event will take place indoors in the multipurpose room and is FREE of charge.

6:00 p.m. James Milton Turner (as portrayed by Greg Carr) – Stand on the Promises: James Milton Turner and the Promise of America commemorates the life of one of Missouri’s most prominent 19th century African American leaders, James Milton Turner. The performance chronicles how Turner overcame the difficulties of slavery, being educated secretly in St. Louis, helping to establish schools for African Americans after the Civil War, and an appointment as U.S. minister to Liberia by Ulysses S. Grant. Greg Carr is an instructor of Speech and Theatre at Harris-Stowe State University in St, Louis and is an accomplished director and writer.
7:00 p.m. Bobby Norfolk – Three-time Emmy Award winner Bobby Norfolk returns to the park with The Poetry and Prose of Harlem; Dreams Deferred. Norfolk will celebrate African American art, music, and poetry exploding out of Harlem in the early 20th century. During this artistic journey, Norfolk with share poetry of Langston Hughes and others, prose, vignettes and toe-tapping music. Experience the Harlem Renaissance through this performance!

11:00 a.m. Cesar Chavez (as portrayed by Fred Blanco) –Fred Blanco has toured his one-man show, The Stories of Cesar Chavez throughout the U.S. and Canada for close to 11 years. Depicting Cesar Chavez and a host of fictional characters from the Farm Workers Movement Blanco has received various awards at theatre festivals throughout the country. Blending fact and fiction the story begins with Cesar engaging in his first hunger strike. Weak and tired Cesar seeks guidance through prayer and ends up following la Virgen De Guadalupe on a spiritual journey through his past to regain his strength.
12:00 p.m. Paul Laurence Dunbar (as portrayed by Paxton Williams) – Former Executive Director of the Carver Birthplace Association Paxton Williams will perform At Mother Dunbar's Request as poet, novelist, and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar was one of the first influential black poets in American literature and gained international acclaim for his work.
1:00 p.m. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (as portrayed by Rebecca Now) – Rebecca Now performs as suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and leading figure of the early women’s rights women movement, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Now brings Stanton to life with her story and 19th century speeches to life. The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote.
2:00 p.m. Michael Pahsetopah - Award-winning Oklahoma dancer and storyteller flute player. Mike Pahsetopah is a member of the Osage tribe and introduces stories of the Circle. Stories that capture the Native American cultural tradition giving the listeners understanding through native eyes.
Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator, and humanitarian. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri on Highway V, then ¼ mile south on Carver Road. For more information, please call the park at 417-325-4151 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m..
