The National Park Service is hosting a commemoration of the 280th birthday of General Greene at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park on Saturday August 6, 2022. General Greene’s actual birthday falls on Sunday August 7.

The celebration starts with a special ceremonial firing of a new cannon recently donated to the park by the Guilford Battleground Company (GBC), and the Society of the Cincinnati. The firing will take place at 10 a.m. near Tour Stop #6 (See map attached). This six-pounder bronze cannon will be used in living history demonstrations at the site for years to come. According to first-hand accounts of the battle, both the Continental Army and the British had four, six-pounder bronze cannons. This new cannon will look similar to cannons that were on the battlefield at Guilford Courthouse.

That will be followed by a special presentation by author and former Guilford Courthouse park ranger, Scott Culclasure, entitled “General Greene: A Character Sketch,” at 11:30 a.m. in the Visitor Center theater. In addition, Park Ranger Jason Baum will be leading a guided tour of the battlefield at 3:00 p.m.

Finally, the NPS will host a special Junior Ranger Naturalist event at Hoskins Farm (2200 New Garden Road) from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The event will feature many local agencies with a variety of hands-on demonstrations that will help visitors to understand how to help park rangers  protect our natural resources. Volunteers and staff from the Greensboro Science Center, Greensboro Recycling, Greensboro Parks and Recreation, the North Carolina Herpetological Society, and Guilford County Soil and Water will be among the agencies joining us for this event. Visitors of all ages are invited to make a bracelet with UV-color changing beads, make a solar oven to cook s’mores, create plaster casts of animal footprints using molds, discover more about the animals that live in the area, and so much more!

We hope to see you at the park for a great birthday celebration for the General!
