Join Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve and partners this summer for Family Archeology Days! Explore the San Luis Valley with professional archeologists and learn about our rich history. Visit real archeological sites and participate in hands on activities to immerse yourself in the Valley’s culture and learn how archeologists study and protect our history.

  • 2025 Program Dates are as follows
    • Friday June 6th
    • Saturday June 14th
    • Saturday July 12th
    • Saturday July 19th
    • Saturday July 26th
    • August Day To Be Determined
  • All program participation is free! Certain locations (the Great Sand Dunes & Fort Garland) may have an entrance fee.
  • Places to visit include the Great Sand Dunes, Penitente Canyon, Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge, and more! Your own transportation required – meeting places will vary.
  • Fun for most ages – while designed with families in mind, certain locations will have a minimum age requirement for safety reasons.

Family Archeology Day at Fort Garland

Join Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center on June 6th for our first Family Archeology Day of the summer!
Come and learn about how archeology has led to a deeper understanding of the Fort’s story. Enjoy a guided tour of the Fort and learn how the buildings were made by making your own adobe bricks!
Ages 8 and up recommended
Things to bring: Clothes and shoes that can get dirty for the adobe bricks
