Join Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve and partners this summer for Family Archeology Days! Explore the San Luis Valley with professional archeologists and learn about our rich history. Visit real archeological sites and participate in hands on activities to immerse yourself in the Valley’s culture and learn how archeologists study and protect our history.

  • 2025 Program Dates are as follows
    • Friday June 6th
    • Saturday June 14th
    • Saturday July 12th
    • Saturday July 19th
    • Saturday July 26th
    • August Day To Be Determined
  • All program participation is free! Certain locations (the Great Sand Dunes & Fort Garland) may have an entrance fee.
  • Places to visit include the Great Sand Dunes, Penitente Canyon, Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge, and more! Your own transportation required – meeting places will vary.
  • Fun for most ages – while designed with families in mind, certain locations will have a minimum age requirement for safety reasons.

Family Archeology Day at Great Sand Dunes

Join professional archaeologists at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve for our next Family Archeology Day! Come discover the lives of the valley’s indigenous people through living artifacts and learn how real archaeologists protect and document our culturally modified trees.

Cost: $25 per vehicle or America the Beautiful pass required to enter the park, no additional program cost

Restrictions: Ages 8 and up only, ability to walk on uneven surfaces required

Things to bring: Water, sunscreen, closed-toe shoes, packed lunch, hat and sunglasses
