To protect public and firefighter safety, Baker Creek and Grey Cliffs campgrounds will close for the winter season at noon PST Nov. 2, consistent with seasonal closures. Baker Creek Road and Pole Canyon Road will close at the winter turnaround gates, and the burn area will be closed to the public during operations. The Baker Creek Trailhead will also be inaccessible during the burn. Visitors should obey all closure signs and follow instructions from firefighters and park staff. Roads and areas closed specifically for the burn will reopen when operations are complete and conditions are safe.
Smoke may be visible from the town of Baker and from areas in Snake Valley during and after the burn operations. Smoke can affect visibility and air quality. Fire managers will monitor smoke conditions and conduct the burn under conditions intended to minimize smoke impacts to local communities. During the prescribed burn, smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight. Current air-quality information is available at AirNow.gov or on the NPS Weather and Air Quality Data website.
The prescribed burn is part of Great Basin National Park's ongoing fire management program to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, restore fire-dependent ecosystems and reduce wildfire risk to surrounding communities and infrastructure. Prescribed burns are carefully planned and conducted under specific weather and fuel conditions to safely manage fire on the landscape. The upcoming burn builds on approximately 55 acres successfully treated with prescribed fire in October 2025.
