BAKER, Nev. – At noon on Wednesday, August 13, Great Basin National Park is implementing Stage II Fire Restrictions, including a ban on all campfires, charcoal grills, and smoking outdoors within park boundaries.Until further notice, Great Basin visitors are prohibited from building any wood or charcoal fires in the park, and from smoking outside of an enclosed vehicle or designated smoking area. The use of stoves or grills using compressed or liquified gas or jellied petroleum is permitted.
With live fuel moistures at or near all-time lows – in some cases, drier than kiln-dried lumber – and above-normal temperatures predicted to continue, conditions in the park are primed for wildfire. Later this week, weather forecasters are calling for thunderstorms to bring dry lightning and winds gusting over 30 mph over a wide area of Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Reducing the threat of human-caused fires in the park is of critical importance as firefighters prepare for the potential of numerous lightning fires in the region.
“We deeply appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our visitors as we work together to protect lives, property, and park resources,” Superintendent Ashley Adams said. “The appeal of a campfire is enduring, but right now is not the right time. I ask everyone to do their part to prevent wildfires in the park.”
