Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has been provided to thin fire-prone stands of vegetation at various locations in Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore. This series of projects is designed to enhance wildfire protection for neighboring communities and park structures. Substantial work has been accomplished since November 2009. The following eucalyptus thinning projects in the Marin Headlands at Golden Gate National Recreation Area are in various stages of completion: * Fort Barry Work is also being planned for Upper Tamalpais Valley west of Erica Road, tentatively scheduled for summer 2010: At all of these sites, smaller trees, 18 inches in diameter and less, are being targeted for removal to reduce hazardous fuel. See an example of a past project before and after treatment. GGNRA OPEN HOUSE FEBRUARY 23, 2010 - The Recovery Act Fuel Reduction Projects were featured at the park open house. An exhibit and a "People at Work" slide show were presented. PROJECT TOUR MARCH 18, 2010 - A tour of the Marin Drive / Miwok Trail and Upper Tam Valley sites is scheduled for Thursday, March 18.
