Video Discussion Question

Fort Vancouver was the center of a large trading network, which stretched from London to Hawai'i. Who was involved in this trade, and why?

Consider:
  • Who benefited from the fur trade, either by getting money, land, or power in the Northwest?
  • Who did not benefit from the fur trade?
  • What were some of the different roles played by people in the Hudson's Bay Company's trading network?
  • Do everyday people, like you, have a role in today's global trading networks?

Activity: Global Trade

Furs collected at Fort Vancouver, whether in the Fur Store or at the Indian Trade Shop, would travel thousands of miles to reach markets in London. This journey around Cape Horn and across the Atlantic Ocean could take as long as 9 to 11 months! Trade goods arriving at the Indian Trade Shop had to make the same journey. To learn more about these trade networks, your teacher may give you this fun activity about global trade.
