Fort Sumter National Monument announces the receipt of grant funds from The Humanities Council South Carolinaand the SC Department of Education. The combined award of $4,700 will help fund this spring’s Morris Island Expeditions, an educational outreach program for eighth grade students at Burke Middle High School and the Charleston Military Magnet. Project funds will go for classroom study and field trips to introduce inner-city youth to the significant Civil War history of Morris Island involving the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Film, oral history, drama, and site visits are part of the school-based study.
“These trips are an effort to awaken students to the excitement of history and to the challenges of conservation,” said project director Carlin Timmons, the park ranger who piloted the program in 2004. “Introducing students to the fragile resources and powerful past of their own harbor is the main objective of these expeditions. Being awarded these grant funds is an honor for the project, for the park and for the students.” |
