Fort Sumter National Monument will celebrate the 95th anniversary of Flag Day with two days of free activities on Saturday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 14 at the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. Adults and children alike can come and learn about the history and heritage that surrounds our nation’s flag and other historical flags. There will be hands on activities and an activity sheet for the children to take on their boat ride to Fort Sumter.
Flag Day was first established via Presidential Proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916 following several years of local and state celebrations of the United States Flag’s history. Signed into law on August 3, 1949 by President Harry Truman, an act of Congress designated June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.
The Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square is a unit of Fort Sumter National Monument. Located at 340 Concord Street in Charleston, the facility includes a museum, a ferry boat facility for tours to Fort Sumter and a bookstore. The visitor center is open daily from 8:30—5:00 except for New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. Concession-operated ferry boats depart to Fort Sumter daily. While the visitor center and Liberty Square are free, there is a cost to ride the concession-operated ferry.
