Fort Pulaski Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of National Public Lands Day

SAVANNAH, GA  More than 170,000 volunteers will take part in the 20th annual National Public Lands Day onSaturday, September 28, 2013. As the nation’s largest one-day volunteer event in support of public lands, more than 2,000 sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will host a wide array of activities. The volunteer efforts will equal $15 million in improvements. 

National Public Lands Day 2013 has been declared a fee-free day at all National Park Service sites. In addition to free admission onSeptember 28, every participating volunteer on National Public Lands Day at Fort Pulaski National Monument will receive a coupon for a fee free visit to any participating National Public Lands Day site. 

Service projects for this year’s event will include debris removal throughout our site, including our marshes and the McQueen Island Rails to Trails. Volunteers will also participate in trail work and historic preservation activities.

Advance registration is required. All those interested in participating in National Public Lands Day must pre-register with Gloria Lee via email at e-mail us or by phone at (912) 786-5787 extension 104 by Friday, September 20. Due to the popularity of this annual event, a limited number of volunteers will be allowed to participate.

Volunteer registration begins on Saturday, September 28 at 8:00 AM in the Fort Pulaski Picnic Area. Complimentary breakfast will be served during registration. Work projects will last from 9:00 AM until 12:00noon, followed by complimentary lunch. Volunteers should be prepared to work outdoors. Sturdy closed-toed, closed-heeled shoes must be worn.  Comfortable clothing, sun block, insect repellant, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats are recommended. Tools and gloves will be provided. Volunteers will receive special, limited edition reusable bags designed for Fort Pulaski’s National Public Lands Day event. 

Following the National Public Lands Day activities, volunteers are encouraged to enjoy the park’sSaturdayprogramming, which include a Ranger’s Choice program at1:00 PM, a cannon firing at2:00 PM, and a guided fort tour at 3:00 PM.
