Film Premiere at Fort Pulaski

Savannah, GA - On Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 7:30 PM, Fort Pulaski National Monument will host the premiere of the latest historical documentary from filmmaker Michael Jordan of Cosmos Mariner Productions. This event is one of many being offered as a part of the commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Siege & Reduction of Fort Pulaski.

"Savannah in the Civil War" is an expansive, exciting new film, utilizing local and regional actors, numerous noted historians and authors, and many local historic sites to both explore little-known, fascinating stories of Savannah in the Civil War and to make the old, familiar tales come alive in new ways. No matter how long you've been interested in the Civil War in Savannah, you are guaranteed to come away with a new appreciation for what people endured during those four turbulent years, and of the profound impact that the war still has on Savannah today.

This special event will also include the premiere of "Stalling Sherman's Army: The Battle at Monteith Swamp." This short film documents a recent National Park Service-funded archaeological investigation conducted by the LAMAR Institute. The project unearthed new artifacts and information about this little-known battle outside Savannah. In December 1864, a small group of Confederate veterans and home guard gathered in eastern Effingham County to delay the inevitable approach of Union General William T. Sherman's left wing - part of Sherman's "March to the Sea." Though the outcome was certain before the first shot was fired, the Battle of Monteith Swamp was a trial by fire for men in blue and in gray.

The film premiere will feature an introductory talk by filmmaker Michael Jordan. "Savannah in the Civil War" will be available for purchase in the bookstore at Fort Pulaski National Monument. Visitors are welcome to bring blankets and picnics to enjoy an evening under the stars in the historic fort. Alcohol is prohibited.

Cost for admission is $5.00 per adult. Children aged 15 and under are free. The fee is payable by cash or check made out to the "National Park Service".

Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on U.S. Highway 80, 15 miles east of Savannah. For more information, please visit the park website at www.nps.gov/fopu or call (912) 786-5787. You can also follow the park on Twitter or like the official Fort Pulaski National Monument Facebook page.
