Contact: Joel Cadoff, (912) 786-5787 X 114 Park Commemorates Veteran’s Day Weekend with a Special Living History Event SAVANNAH, GA – Fort Pulaski National Monument will honor our nation’s veterans with a special living history event in the historic fort. The 48th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment will recreate many aspects of daily life at a major Civil War-era post. A variety of programs will be offered throughout the weekend allowing visitors to learn about military inspections, mail calls, barracks life, and infantry drills. A special military salute to veterans will be offered at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8. The 48th New York Infantry was stationed at Fort Pulaski from June 1862 through June 1863. During their year-long stay, the unit remained vigilant, always prepared for a Confederate counter attack, an attack that never materialized. Their stay was documented in a series of early photographs that are displayed in exhibits throughout the park. “Fort Pulaski is proud to present programs that bring the history of the Civil War to life and create a better understanding of the experiences of those who those who lived and worked at the Fort,” commented Superintendent Melissa Memory. “Veterans day weekend, we’ll bring that subject to life as a salute to all veterans who have served our country.” The schedule for the weekend of Veterans Day is as follows: Saturday, November 8, 2014 10:00 Company Drill Sunday, November 9, 2014 9:00 Barracks Cleaning To commemorate Veterans Day, the National Park Service will waive all entrance fees. Savannah’s national park – Fort Pulaski National Monument – will be fee free Tuesday, November 11. Active duty service men and women - Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and activated National Guard and Reserves - can obtain a free annual pass waiving entrance fees to all 401 national parks. Active duty military personnel and dependents with proper identification (CAC Card or DD Form 1173) can obtain the military version of the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass which permits free entrance to sites managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Army Corps. The pass is also available at these locations.
